One in three Aussies lives with some kind of chronic inflammatory disease. While some products may offer anti-inflammatory properties, there’s one thing Dr Harrison Weisinger recommends.

Inflammation is a natural process in which immune cells, such as white blood cells, proteins and fluid, are attracted to a site of injury.

The purpose of inflammation is to protect the body from harm or further harm.

If you were to twist your ankle, for example, your ankle would be hot, swollen and painful within minutes. This response is your body’s way of telling you to not hurt it further by standing on it.

Inflammatory processes occur within our bodies every second, without them we couldn’t survive, but our bodies constantly manage the balance between switching inflammation on and off.

We run into trouble when that balance is disrupted, and we get inflammation in places where it’s a nuisance or, worse still, harmful to us.

Approximately one in three Australians lives with a chronic inflammatory disease, such as diabetes, obesity, endometriosis, multiple sclerosis, irritable bowel disease, and arthritis, to name just a few.

How to reduce chronic inflammation

Reducing inflammation can greatly enhance the quality of life, as well as significantly extending it.

Chronic inflammation has an incredibly negative effect on lifestyle, interfering with sleep, daily activity and therefore work and general enjoyment of life. It also takes a grave toll on relationships.

Eating a balanced and nutritious diet, while paying particular attention to reducing the intake of refined sugars and simple carbohydrates can reduce inflammation.

Though it’s always important to discuss dietary changes with your doctor, I can categorically say that lowering dietary carbohydrates reduces inflammation. This also improves body composition, mood, physical and brain function throughout the day.

Other promising studies

There have now been thousands of scientific publications articulating the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects of curcumin (an extract from turmeric).

To this end, big pharma is investing a lot of money into how best they can harvest the benefits of curcumin, so it’s definitely something worth incorporating into your diet.

There are also numerous studies on the health benefits of fasting and good sleep to help reduce inflammation as well.

But without question, the single most important thing anyone can do to improve their lives is to pay attention to the signs of inflammation – and do everything they can to reduce it.
